Divine Retribution 2000 ATV

With the year 2000 being my 50th in Hongkong, I started the year by looking for something to celebrate this anniversary with. I am still brainstorming with some friends about the possibility of a concert or two before the year ends, but among one of the first phone calls I received in this new millennium was one from my old friends at ATV, offering me a meaty role in one of their biggest dramas of the year.

I didn’t need to hear more than that two of my favourite local actors, Adam Cheng Siu Chow (鄭少秋) and Sean Lau Ching Wan (劉青雲), were starring in it to say ‘yes’!

ATV has also assembled an all-star supporting cast.

And there were many bonuses along the way…first of all it was a reunion with Executive Producer Wai Ka Fai (韋家輝), who also wrote the script. More years ago than I care to remember, I acted in the first TV drama he ever wrote called “Heung Sing Long Chee” (香城浪子) over at HK-TVB.

Secondly I was constantly surrounded by beautiful ladies……including three former Miss Asias

Alice Chan Wai 陳煒(Miss Asia 1996) and Yoko Wong Mei 王薇(Miss Asia Runner-up 1993) , and Belinda Hamnet Hon Kwun-ting 韓君婷(Miss Asia 1997).

(Way back in the ’80s I had the pleasure of co-compering the Miss Asia-Pacific Pageant, so we had something in common!)

Everyone on the set was very helpful to me and most understanding of the fact that I don’t read Chinese and therefor had to work twice as hard with the script….Alice Chan was particularly helpful, ‘thank you Alice!’

And what a story……go to HK-ATV for details……but to me it seemed like a combination of The X-Files, old Chinese swordsman movies, Indiana Jones and Third Rock From The Sun!!!

In a nutshell, I play an international financier who comes to Asia and monkeys around with the stockmarkets…and that’s probably the understatement of the year!

Over the years I have been very fortunate to appear in some highly rated Cantonese TV dramas and I have a feeling that Divine Retribution is going to be another highlight.

It airs on ATV Home (Chinese Channel) from September 11, 2000……Monday to Friday……and there are 40 episodes. Check your TV listings in case changes have been made.

I’m sure videos will be on sale or available for rental in Chinatowns around the World.

Don’t forget to let me have your comments, good or bad, in my guestbook!
